Watched the first nearly competitive game of the season last night, first round of the Herts Charity Cup against Broxbourne Borough V&E, well I did say nearly competitive! Looked to me like the match was used as a further trial of some of the fringe players with a few first teamers thrown in for good measure. Ben Stone played very well in goal and was pinpoint with his goal kicks, certainly worthy of the subs bench behind Nicky Eyre.
Dave Chick looked good even though he does have a slighlty Hitleresk hair cut and Taylor-Forbes can certainly run a bit. As ever with these unimportant cup games it went in to bloody extra time and then to add insult to injury penalties, we lost 4-3 ensuring that we can concentrate on the league...... and the FA Cup........ and the FA Trophy.......... and whatever Mickey Mouse league cup we end up with this season.
A match tonight (Wednesday 5th August) against a West Ham XI should give some idea of the starting line up against Newport County this coming Saturday and that's when the excitement really begins.
